Biography

Andreas Matzarakis was born 1960 in Pentalofos, Province of Evros, Greece. He studied meteorology at the Ludwigs-Maximilians-Universitat (LMU) Munich. His completed his dissertation on the bioclimate of Greece in 1995 at the Aristoteles University in Thessaloniki. Between 1995 and 2001 he was post-doctoral research assistant at the Institute of Meteorology of the University of Freiburg. He wrote his habilitation on the 'thermal component of the urban climate'. Between October 2001 and July 2015 he was senior research associate at the University of Freiburg, where he was appointed Adjunct Professor in October 2006. Since August 2015 he is head of the Research Centre Human Biometeorology of the German Meteorological Service. Between 1996 and 2014 he chaired the commission for climate, tourism and recreation the International Society of Biometeorology and he was vice-president of the International Society of Biometeorology between 2006 and 2007. Since 2016 he is the chairman or the German Society for the advancement of medical-meteorological research.

Research Interest

His core research interests are in human bioclimatology and urban climatology, climatology of tourism and climate change impact research. A further research focus is the development of models and tools for applied climatology and biometeorology (e.g. the Rayman model, SkyHelios model, Climate Mapping Tool and CTIS (Climate-Tourism-Information-System)).

BIO

Professor Chimay Anumba is Dean of the College of Design, Construction and Planning at The University of Florida. He is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, FREng. He holds a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from the University of Leeds, U.K.; a higher doctorate – D.Sc. (Doctor of Science) - from Loughborough University, U.K.; and an Honorary Doctorate (Dr.h.c.) from Delft University of Technology in The Netherlands. He has over 500 scientific publications (including 20 books and over 200 journal papers) and his work has received support worth over $150m. He has also supervised 50 doctoral candidates to completion and mentored over 25 postdoctoral scholars. He is the recipient of the 2018 ASCE Computing in Civil Engineering Award and is a member of the U.S. National Academy of Construction.

Executive Director - Global Cool Cities Alliance - Washington, DC | June 2011 – Present

• Manage all aspects of operation for non-profit focused on the global adoption of urban heat island mitigation technologies such as cool roofs and cool pavements including strategic direction, partnership development, fundraising, program development, public relations and marketing, and financial and back-office management.
• Lead the Cool Cities Network in partnership with C40: Cities of Climate Leadership. The Network is 40 cities working together on urban heat island mitigation policy implementation issues.   
• Serve as technical and implementation lead for the Million Cool Roofs Challenge to grow markets for cool surfaces in countries with an acute lack of access to cooling services. 
• Serve on the Cooling for All Global Panel to advise United Nations and United Nations-adjacent organizations on cooling and excess heat issues.  Provided detailed advisory services for Sustainable Energy for All’s Chilling Prospects report.
• Serve as a founding partner of the Los Angeles Urban Cooling Collaborative, a research and policy collaboration to evaluate the neighborhood-scale effect of cooling strategies and to interface with city agencies to drive heat resilient policy.
• Advise World Bank Group on urban cooling implementation practices, strategies, and technologies.
• Lead research project to identify existing testing standards for radiative properties and good practices for testing regimes for Asian Pacific Economic Cooperation.
• Developed aerial imagery algorithm with World Resources Institute to characterize the solar reflectance of all U.S. surfaces.
• Participated in the NYC Mayor’s Urban Heat Island Working Group and co-led the sub-group on cool pavement strategies and recommendations.
• Acted as Principal Investigator for the U.S. Department Energy on a project to promote markets for reflective surface, energy efficiency and renewable energy products and services in South Africa.
• Acted as Implementing Agent on behalf of the U.S. Department of Energy to the Cool Roofs and Pavements Working Group, a joint initiative of the Clean Energy Ministerial and the International Partnership for Energy Efficiency Cooperation.
• Manage CoolRoofToolkit.org, which includes a primer, implementation guide for city policy makers, and a user-friendly knowledge base of over 750 articles, research papers, and policy materials. The site gets nearly 1000 unique visitors each month.
• Serve as Subject Matter Expert for urban heat for the Clean Energy Solutions Center.
• Support original research initiatives to advance policymakers’ understanding of heat in a local context.
• Developed cool roofs action plans for Mexico and South Africa that have been adopted by those governments along with key industry and academic stakeholders.  The action plans have resulted in national impact studies, improved technical capacity amongst researchers, changes to national building codes, and the development of product testing and rating regimes. 
• Worked with Washington DC on its Smart Roofs initiative to convert 3 million sq. ft. of government roofs to sustainable materials and to create a policymaker assessment tool.
• Lead a collaborative to develop and promote cool roof performance standards for local, national, and international building energy codes and standards.
• Organized conferences to highlight cool surfaces, to drive policy/market development, and to develop implementation action plans in Athens, Brazil, Dubai, Mexico, South Africa, and Washington DC.
